Russia develops software to simulate fuel handling

A project launched by Russia's National Research Nuclear University Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (NRNU-MEPhI) may strengthen Russia’s leading position in the global nuclear technology market after researchers developed a software package that simulates nuclear fuel handling processes, Sputnik reported.

The work was undertaken as part of the Proryv (Breakthrough) project, which aims to streamline breeder reactor closed nuclear fuel cycle technology.  Under the Proryv project, researchers are developing the sodium-cooled BN-1200 fast reactor and a pilot-demonstration energy complex for the BREST-OD-300 lead-cooled fast reactor.

NRNU MEPhI has partnered with the National Research Centre Kurchatov Institute to develop the REPRORYV (Recycle for PRORYV) software package, which simulates nuclear fuel-handling processes outside reactors. The software code simulates the loading and reloading nuclear fuel inside the cores of fast neutron reactors and fuel processing and can calculate neutron-physical specifications for any nuclear fuel.
